Problem Tips:

This one is a pretty simple one to get us started but it's still a little tricky because like I talked about on the intro video for Ear Training 101 if you are someone who hears the 3rd or the 5th of a note instead of the actual note, this will be a tough one for you even though it's skill level 1 out of 10.

Try to figure out the key first and whether or not my guitar is tuned Flat or is a Standard tuning.  I may mix it up and use flat at times or standard at times.  This is because in the real world you may have to figure out what tuning a player is using.  It's a skill you have to have if you want to figure out riffs and tune your ear in.  It's really a very logical process and it's best to not over think it.

Once you have the key go from there and figure it out one piece at a time.  The trick is to listen to the riff closely and figure out how its put together and learn it in pieces.  Also, a very important thing with learning riffs like this one is to listen for what notes are the same rather than what notes are different.  This is what I call a pattern riff.  It's a repeating pattern.  These are usually very easy to learn because if you solve 1 part of it the rest of it sort of falls into place very logically.  The tricky thing with this riff will be nailing the chord voicings.

The answer to this problem will contain a lesson on this sort of riff and figuring them out.  For now since this is the first one, just take a shot at it.  It makes no difference if you're right or wrong.  Ultimately what this may teach some of you is that even when you think you're 100% correct and your way is the way, you can actually be wrong.  And that's ok, it's good to know that and always good to learn from that.  Most of you should get this riff no problem but if you can't don't sweat it, that's why this page is hear and in no time at all you'll be picking right up on them.
