EVH TUNINGS

This page deals with the tunings Ed uses. Use it as a quick reference to tune to the CDs.
Some notes may need a slight tweak on your part. But this should give you the idea of what Tunings to use..
V. H. really varied their tunings. Usually Ed just picked up his guitar and whatever it was tuned to Mike Anthony tuned to that.

Simply match your low 6th string to the tuning below then tune the rest of your strings to that low string. Pitches below are approximate.

Tuning	Common V.H. Usage

Flat Tuning: Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Click here	Most DLR era stuff and some newer songs. There are a wide range of songs that use this tuning. It is the most common for most of the DLR era.

Standard Tuning: E, A, D, G, B, E. Click here	Most of the Sammy 5150 era or OU812 etc. Keyboard V.H. songs and some DLR era tunes.

Drop D flat tuning: Db, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Click here	Very popular on some of the newer songs as well as the Fair Warning CD. Songs like Unchained, Dirty Movies etc. Ed also used a standard tuning with a Drop D for other songs like Baluchitherium for example. To do that simply tune to the standard tuning and drop the E string to a D and you're good to go.

Open D7 (no 3rd) tuning from Top Jimmy: D, A, D, A, C, D Click here	Used for Top Jimmy its an open D7 chord tuning with a standard tuning. Can also be done 1/2 step flat as well. It actually gives a cool rich sound. But it's great for use with harmonics of course. You can use this tuning for something like guitar 2 sort of like what Ed did. He did the solo to Top Jimmy with a regular guitar tuning and use this tuning for the rhythm sections.

Odd ball In between tuning from the Diver Down: Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Click here	This is one of those in between tunings. Its not quite flat and not quite standard. Like I said they just picked up the guitar and played. Diver Down is a good example of this tuning. Each song is somewhere between flat and standard. Or just standard in some cases.
